A door that used to shut with a light push and now requires a shoulder or a slam is telling you something is wrong. Doors are simple mechanical devices, and when they stop closing properly, the cause is almost always one of a handful of common issues. Sometimes the fix is a five minute adjustment, and sometimes the sticking points to a larger structural problem that needs attention.
When a door will not close properly, the source of the trouble is usually visible if you know where to look. Here are the most common reasons doors become difficult to close and what each one means for the repair.
The House or Building Has Settled
Buildings move. Foundations shift over decades as soil compacts, moisture levels change, and materials expand and contract with the seasons. When a building settles, the walls and doorframes move with it, and doors that used to fit their frames properly no longer do.
How Settling Shows Up
The most common sign of settling is a door that binds at one specific corner, usually the top or the bottom on one side. A door that rubs at the top on the latch side, for example, usually means the frame has tilted slightly, so the door no longer clears the header.
Sometimes shaving a small amount of material off the offending edge solves the problem. Other times the fix requires resetting the hinges or adjusting the frame itself. In extreme cases, foundation issues need to be addressed before the door will ever fit properly again.
Humidity Has Swollen the Door
Wood doors absorb moisture from the air. During humid summer months, the wood swells slightly, and the door gets larger. If the fit was already tight, the door will start sticking as the humidity rises.
This is completely normal for wood doors. What is not normal is a door that continues to bind after the humidity drops. That situation usually points to water damage that has permanently swollen the wood, or a finish that has failed and let too much moisture into the door core.
Managing Humidity Damage
A door that swells and shrinks with the seasons is usually fine as long as the movement stays within a reasonable range. Adding weatherstripping that compresses to absorb the seasonal difference can smooth things out.
A door that has taken permanent damage from moisture needs to be replaced or, in some cases, planed down and refinished. If the core has started to rot, planing will not solve the underlying problem.
The Hinges Have Sagged
Every hinge on every door carries weight. Over the years, that weight causes hinges to loosen, screws to back out, and the whole door to drop slightly in the frame. A sagging door drags at the bottom on the latch side and often catches on the strike plate.
The Screw Test
Open the door and look at the hinge screws. If any of them appear to have backed out even slightly, tighten them with a screwdriver. If a screw spins in place without grabbing, the wood behind it has stripped out.
The fix for a stripped screw hole is to remove the screw, push several wooden toothpicks dipped in wood glue into the hole, let the glue dry, and then reinstall the screw into the reinforced hole. This restores a solid grip and often solves the sagging problem entirely.
The Door Has Warped
Doors warp when they experience different conditions on each face. The most common cause is an exterior door that has hot sun on one side and cool interior air on the other. The temperature difference makes one face of the door expand more than the other, and the door bows out of shape.
Warping Is Progressive
A warped door usually starts as a minor issue that gets worse over time. The door might close with a bit of effort at first, then require more force each season, until eventually it will not close at all.
Warping cannot be reversed once it has set into the door. The only real solution is replacement, ideally with a door made of materials that resist warping. Fiberglass and steel doors handle temperature differentials much better than wood does.
The Weatherstripping Has Compressed Too Far
New weatherstripping compresses slightly when the door closes, which creates a good seal without making the door hard to close. Old weatherstripping loses its compression, but new weatherstripping installed on top of an already tight door can make the door impossible to close.
Getting the Fit Right
If a door becomes hard to close right after new weatherstripping was installed, the seal is probably too thick for the gap. Removing it and installing a thinner profile usually solves the problem.
Some weatherstripping is adjustable, with fins that can be trimmed to fit the actual gap of the door. Getting this fit right is one of the more common calls that door repair services handle after homeowners attempt to install weatherstripping themselves.
The Frame Has Damage
The frame around the door has to hold its shape for the door to fit properly. Water damage, impact damage, or foundation movement can all knock a frame out of true. Once the frame is no longer square, no amount of adjustment on the door itself will make it close properly.
Recognizing Frame Issues
Look at the reveal, which is the gap between the door and the frame all the way around when the door is closed. If the gap is even on all sides, the frame is square. If the gap widens or narrows on one side, the frame has moved.
Small frame issues can sometimes be corrected by resetting the hinges or planing the door edge. Larger issues usually mean the frame itself has to be repaired or replaced.
The Latch or Strike Plate Is Misaligned
Sometimes the door closes fine, but the latch does not engage. The bolt hits the edge of the strike plate instead of dropping into the hole, so the door bounces back open.
The Marker Test
To check alignment, close the door slowly and watch where the latch bolt contacts the strike plate. If it hits too high or too low, the plate needs to be moved. Repositioning a strike plate usually takes about fifteen minutes and involves enlarging the hole slightly or repositioning the plate up or down.
Calling for Professional Help
Some door issues have straightforward fixes that any homeowner can handle. Others involve structural problems, frame damage, or fire door compliance issues that need a professional assessment. A door that has been difficult to close for a long time often has multiple issues stacked together, and untangling them takes some experience.
Getting a door assessed early prevents the situation from getting worse. A door that binds today may not close at all in six months if the underlying issue keeps developing. The cost of an early service call is almost always lower than the cost of an emergency repair after the door has failed completely.
Doors are supposed to be quiet workhorses that get out of the way and do their job. When one starts making itself known through sticking, dragging, or refusing to close, it is time to figure out why before the small annoyance grows into a real problem.
